press release :: Katie Murray | Recent Work

NEW YORK, NY - jen bekman is pleased to present Katie Murray's first solo exhibition at the gallery: a series of large scale c-prints which combine portraiture and landscape. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2004 from 6pm - 8pm. The work will remain on view through June 19, 2004. Murray's work will be concurrently exhibited at White Columns (May 14-June 20) in White Room 2.

The photographs in this series simultaneously embrace splendor and decay. Murray's subjects populate the landscape, but live in various states of trying to connect to it. Echoes of classical archetypes and mythic images manifest themselves in banal and beautiful places. A dichotomy of connection and disconnection occurs within the narrative of the portraits, as well as in the contrast between contemporary urban and traditional rural landscapes. Backyards, the beach, an abandoned lot; these are familiar and exotic settings where conflict is explored.
