press release :: Jeffrey Teuton | Heart of Gold and Other Expensive Things

February 9 – March 11, 2006

NEW YORK, NY — jen bekman is pleased to present heart of gold and other expensive things, an exhibition of 10 paintings by Jeffrey Teuton. The exhibition will be on view from February 9 – March 11, 2006 at jen bekman, located at 6 Spring Street, between Elizabeth and Bowery, New York, 10012.

Jen Bekman will host an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, February 9, from 6 – 8:00pm at the gallery.

There will be an after-party from 9pm onward at BLVD, located nearby at 199 Bowery.

Teuton’s work is a fusion of pop culture, architecture, icons, fame, power, money, sex, and shopping. He channels his commentary and criticism of contemporary consumer culture (and his own complicity and pleasure in it) via status-obsessed birds who voice their designer desires and Hollywood dreams in thought-bubbles strewn across abstracted landscapes.

Jen Bekman remarks “Teuton’s work is funny and sharp. At its most obvious, the paintings lampoon label whores and status seekers. As a body of work, those themes remain at the forefront, but the undercurrent of alienation and unmet longing becomes more persistent.”

Born and raised in Indiana, Jeffrey Teuton has shown his work in galleries in the United States and Europe, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art recently purchased twenty of his paintings. Teuton studied printmaking at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston as well as ESAD in Strasbourg, France. He lives and works in New York, where he recently returned to after a stint in Los Angeles that he describes as "like falling into a hole wearing a nice Gucci outfit and trying to claw your way out holding a glass of champagne."

Since its inaugural exhibition in March of 2003, jen bekman has attracted the attention of critics, museum curators and collectors alike. Gallery artists and exhibitions have been featured in publications such as ARTFORUM, The New York Times, Interior Design, W Magazine, The Village Voice and New York Magazine. The gallery also has a well-established online presence having been featured on sites such as Curbed, Daily Candy, Gawker, and Gothamist. Ms. Bekman, the gallery's founder and director, is the editor of the popular design weblog, Personism, bringing the gallery and its artists to the attention of an even broader audience of designers, architects, and magazine editors.
