Muldrow’s lush and atmospheric paintings of big box stores, in acrylic and casein, seduce the viewer with both commonplace familiarity and a sense of awe. Her interiors unfold with realism and a wash of color, creating a dialog between banality and the uncanny. Muldrow uses elements of traditional landscape painting to respond to the mundane shopping meccas that are omnipresent across the country. Cathedrals of Desire represents a tension between the chaotic American consumer landscape and the sublime. The resulting images are alluring and arresting, carrying with them a deep weight of consumer desire.
Gallery founder, Jen Bekman writes:
At its heart, Michelle's work is an exploration of the idea that consumerism has replaced religion as a social anchor in contemporary culture. The places and things she is depicting are so mundane that there is no doubt as to what they are as actual things. But, to some extent we've blinded ourselves to the meaning that we've invested in them. By placing manufactured landscapes and their contents in a religious/devotional/ecstatic framework, Michelle makes plain the uncomfortable truths of our consumer culture.
Michelle Muldrow, born in 1968, was raised on Air Force bases throughout America. This nomadic experience laid the foundation for a great appreciation of the American experience and the vernacular that defines the American landscape. While in high school, Muldrow attended the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and went on to attend the University of Minnesota, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. After a 10-year sojourn as a musician, Muldrow returned to painting in 2000 and began exhibiting nationally. She enjoyed a residency at the Cooper Union Summer Residency Program in New York City in 2004. In 2006, after living in San Francisco for 15 years, Muldrow relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where she now calls home. Muldrow exhibits nationally and has been in solo and group exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Utah and Cleveland. Most recently, Michelle Muldrow was named a fellow for the Creative Workforce Grant and is featured in the New American Paintings Midwest Edition 2010.
Cathedrals of Desire is at Jen Bekman Gallery, 6 Spring Street, New York, New York.
